Commissioning Lead Acid Batteries

When you receive your batteries check that the fluid is visible, the electrolyte may seem low, don't add distilled water at this time. Charge the batteries normally.

Label your each of the batteries and each cell within a battery array.
Start a battery log and continuously monitor your batteries with a good hydrometer (not a cheap one from the automotive store or big box store). Purchase a good Hydrometer if you don't have one.
Keep track of individual batteries and cells logging voltage, temperature and specific gravity. Log all measurements after each process you put the battery array through.
Log battery attributes at least once every three months.
Immediately purchase or if you are so inclined and to able build an electronic Battery Desulphanator and connect it to your batteries and leave it there.

...When the batteries are removed from their initial charge check the electrolyte level and top off with distilled or deionized water.

Some things to remember:

Don't overfill the batteries, electrolyte level should be ¼ to ½ below the fill tube neck.
Don't add battery acid to your batteries once they have been cycled.
Don't mix batteries of different sizes, age and type. Never charge differing batteries together.
